Dystonia in Cerebral Palsy: A Story of Variability
On Monday, October 30th, 2023 the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center hosted the 10th Marilyn R. Lindenauer Distinguished Speaker Series with guest speaker Bhooma Aravamuthan, MD, DPhil. Dr. Aravamuthan is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Neurology at the Washington University School of Medicine and Research Director of the Cerebral Palsy Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. A pediatric movement disorders specialist, Dr. Aravamuthan is a respected thought leader in the field of cerebral palsy. Her lecture covered the etiology, definition, intervention and pathophysiology of dystonia in cerebral palsy.
About the Speaker
Dr. Aravamuthan completed her research doctorate at the University of Oxford in England, medical school and pediatrics residency at Washington University in St. Louis (Wash U), and child neurology and movement disorders fellowships at Boston Children’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital before returning to Wash U as faculty. She co-leads the Scientific Program Committees for two national organizations: the Child Neurology Society and the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine. Her other national leadership roles include presiding over the Cerebral Palsy Research Network Committees on Dystonia Research and Dystonia Quality Improvement.
Dr. Aravamuthan's translational research on dystonia pathophysiology following neonatal brain injury is funded by National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and multiple foundation grants. Her research awards most recently include the 2022 American Academy of Neurology Jon Stolk Movement Disorders Research Award and the 2022 Child Neurology Society Philip R. Dodge Young Investigator Award.
She is married and a mom to three children – twin 5 year old boys and a 3 year old girl.
